Guide to Burning Bowl Candles Safely

The Complete Guide to
Burning Bowl Candles Safely

Bowl candles are designed to be both beautiful and practical. Their wide shape creates a stunning display of glowing wax while filling your home with fragrance and warmth. Whether placed on a dining table, coffee table or hallway console, they quickly become a focal point of any room.

Like all candles, however, they should always be enjoyed safely. Following a few simple guidelines will help you get the very best from your handcrafted bowl candle while protecting your home.

Before You Light Your Candle

Choose a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface where the candle cannot be knocked over. Keep it well away from curtains, books, dried flowers, paper decorations and anything else that could catch fire. It’s also important to keep burning candles away from children and pets.

Avoid placing your candle in a draught. Open windows, fans and air conditioning can cause uneven burning, excessive flickering and smoking.

Trim the Wick

Before every burn, trim the wick to around 5mm.

A correctly trimmed wick:

  • Produces a cleaner flame
  • Reduces soot
  • Prevents excessive flickering
  • Helps the candle burn more evenly

If the wick becomes too long during use, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely, trim it and relight it.

Allow the Wax to Melt Evenly

The first burn is often the most important.

Allow your bowl candle to burn long enough for a generous melt pool to develop across much of the surface. This encourages an even burn and maximises fragrance throughout future burns.

Because bowl candles are wider than many container candles, this can take longer than you might expect.

Burn for the Right Length of Time

For most bowl candles, around 2–4 hours is ideal.

Very long burns can allow the container to become excessively hot, while very short burns may lead to uneven wax consumption. Always follow any care instructions supplied with your candle.

Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended

This is the golden rule of candle care.

Always extinguish your candle before:

  • Leaving the room
  • Going to bed
  • Leaving the house

Even if you only expect to be away for a few minutes, it’s always safest to put the candle out.

Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Remove any:

  • Wick trimmings
  • Matches
  • Dust
  • Debris

Anything left in the melted wax can interfere with the flame and increase the chance of excessive burning.

Avoid Moving the Candle

Once lit, the bowl and melted wax become very hot.

Never move a burning candle.

Allow it to cool completely before relocating it.

When to Stop Burning

As your bowl candle nears the end of its life, resist the temptation to burn every last drop of wax.

Stop using the candle when approximately 10–15mm of wax remains in the bowl. Burning beyond this point can cause the container to become dangerously hot and may damage the surface beneath it.

Extinguishing Your Candle

Using a candle snuffer is the gentlest way to extinguish a flame.

If you don’t have one, blow the candle out carefully to avoid splashing hot wax.

Allow the wax to cool naturally before replacing any lid or moving the candle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced candle lovers occasionally make simple mistakes.

Try not to:

  • Burn your candle near open windows.
  • Leave it unattended.
  • Burn it beside curtains or soft furnishings.
  • Allow children or pets near a lit candle.
  • Move the candle while the wax is molten.
  • Burn it right down to the bottom.
  • Leave matches or wick trimmings in the wax.
