There is something rather magical about the end of the day on the Isle of Arran.

As the sun begins to sink towards the horizon, the island seems to slow down. Hills glow with warm amber light, the sea turns to shimmering gold and even familiar beaches take on a completely different character. Whether you’re finishing a day of exploring or simply looking for a peaceful moment with family and friends, watching the sunset is one of the simplest pleasures Arran has to offer.

Here are some of our favourite places to enjoy the evening light.

1. Kildonan Beach

On Arran’s south coast, Kildonan is one of the island’s most peaceful places to end the day. Looking across the Firth of Clyde towards Ailsa Craig, the sunsets here can be spectacular, especially on clear summer evenings.

As the light fades, the sea often becomes mirror calm while seabirds drift overhead. It’s a wonderful spot for an evening stroll before settling on the beach to watch the changing colours.

If you’re lucky, you may even spot seals resting on the nearby rocks.

2. The String Road Viewpoint

Not every great sunset has to be beside the sea.

The String Road cuts through the centre of Arran, offering sweeping views across rolling hills and glens. Pull into one of the safe viewpoints and you’ll often find golden light stretching across the landscape, creating dramatic shadows over the mountains.

Photographers particularly love this location during late summer and early autumn when the evenings are long and the light is wonderfully soft.

3. Blackwaterfoot Beach

Blackwaterfoot is one of Arran’s best-known west coast beaches, and for good reason.

As the sun lowers over the Kilbrannan Sound, the entire bay is bathed in rich oranges, pinks and soft purples. Families gather along the promenade, walkers enjoy the shoreline and the atmosphere becomes wonderfully relaxed.

It’s the perfect place to bring a takeaway coffee or an ice cream and simply enjoy the view.

4. King’s Cave Coast

A short walk from Blackwaterfoot lies one of Arran’s most atmospheric locations.

The coastline around King’s Cave combines rugged cliffs, ancient caves and wide open sea views. Watching the sunset here feels wonderfully wild, with waves gently rolling onto the shore while the cliffs glow in the evening light.

It is worth allowing plenty of time for the walk back before darkness falls.

5. Brodick Bay

If you’re staying in Brodick, you don’t have to travel far.

The bay offers beautiful evening views looking towards Goat Fell as the mountain catches the final rays of sunlight. Reflections shimmer across the water while yachts gently rock in the harbour, creating one of Arran’s most recognisable scenes.

It’s particularly lovely after dinner, with plenty of places nearby to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the shore.

6. Lamlash Shorefront

Lamlash has a quieter feel than Brodick, making it an ideal place to unwind.

Looking across to Holy Isle, the changing evening colours create an ever-changing backdrop for the peaceful bay. On calm evenings the reflections are breathtaking, and the gentle sounds of the harbour make it easy to lose track of time.

Bring a blanket, sit by the water and simply enjoy the moment.

7. Lochranza

At the northern tip of Arran, Lochranza offers a completely different kind of beauty.

The ruined castle, tranquil loch and surrounding mountains create a stunning silhouette as the light begins to fade. Deer are often spotted nearby during the evening, adding to the sense of tranquillity.

It’s one of those places where every sunset feels unique.

A Few Tips for Sunset Watching

• Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset to enjoy the changing colours.
• Bring an extra layer, even during summer, as temperatures can cool quickly.
• Pack a small picnic or flask of tea to make the most of the experience.
• Always take any litter home and help keep Arran’s beaches and beauty spots pristine.
• If you’re exploring after sunset, carry a torch and wear suitable footwear.
